When large-scale disasters disrupt critical operations, businesses need more than basic restoration—they require a coordinated, expert-led recovery solution. We specialise in large and complex loss recovery, delivering tailored restoration services that minimise downtime and protect business continuity. Whether it's fire, flood, or contamination, our approach is rapid, technical, and focused on outcomes.

Following a significant fire event at a rural pet food manufacturing facility, approximately 10,000 square metres of operational space and over $15 million worth of plant and equipment were affected. With smoke and soot contamination impacting production lines, IT systems, office areas, and structural components, a fast and technically sound response was essential.

SGR deployed a full-scale restoration team within 24 hours, operating in two shifts to minimise disruption and restore critical machinery. From forensic assessment and project management to the restoration of high-voltage switchboards and specialist HVAC cleaning, SGR delivered a comprehensive, end-to-end recovery solution.

The Challenge: Extensive Fire and Smoke Damage Across Critical Operations

Following a canola oil fire originating above the new oven at a major pet food manufacturing site, the extent of the loss was severe. Fire and soot damage affected nearly every part of the facility, including:

  • Dry warehouse

  • Bakery and extruder areas

  • Work-in-progress (WIP) and packaging zones

  • Dispatch and receival areas

  • “The Green Mile” hallway

  • Offices and mezzanine levels

  • Cavities above offices and wet areas

  • Wet and dry amenities

  • Distribution and switchboard rooms

  • Dog roll and external front elevation areas

The manufacturer supplies leading supermarket chains, pet stores, and export clients. With production at a standstill, rapid and comprehensive restoration was essential to avoid long-term business interruption and supply chain impact.

The SGR Solution: End-to-End Large Loss Recovery

Technical Loss Assessment:
SGR’s Large Loss and Engineering Division, supported by a forensic investigation team, commenced an immediate site assessment upon engagement. Critical loss data informed a targeted, phased recovery approach.

Rapid Mobilisation and Crew Deployment:
Within 24 hours of approval, SGR mobilised a team of 30–35 restoration professionals, operating in two alternating shifts. Despite the remote location, our team was fully operational on site the following day – a testament to our national deployment capability and planning efficiency.

Business Continuity Focus:
Engineering controls, including air scrubbers, PPE zones, and area segregation, were installed to support site safety and regulatory compliance. Priority areas were jointly identified with the insurer and insured, ensuring critical operations were restored first.

Specialist Equipment and Systems Restoration:
SGR restored high-value production machinery, power supply cabinets (HV), HVAC systems, IT infrastructure, office electronics and general plant equipment. Restoration success exceeded 98% across all equipment and contents.

Structural and Surface Decontamination:
Cleaning extended across the superstructure, roof cavities, mezzanine flooring, tin external elevations and fire-affected internal surfaces. Restoration works were verified by a PRV (Post-Restoration Verification) process – with most areas certified on first inspection.

The Outcome: Millions Saved and Operations Recovered

SGR’s capability to deliver fast, technically competent, and large-scale recovery saved millions in potential losses. The complete recovery program ran for just two and a half months – restoring operational readiness while preventing extended business interruption.
